Who was St Anne?
Saint Anne, the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was a woman of deep faith and virtue. She was born to Eliud and Ismeria and dedicated much of her early life to prayer and service in the temple. At the age of 16, she returned home and, following her mother’s wishes, prepared for marriage. Saint Anne was chosen by God to be the mother of Mary, and through divine intervention, she was united in marriage with Saint Joachim, a righteous man from the lineage of David. Both Anne and Joachim were devoted to God and longed for the coming of the Messiah. However, for many years, they remained childless, enduring social stigma and personal sorrow, yet always maintaining their trust in God.
Praise God the Lord. He has had pity on His people and has freed Israel. Truly He has fulfilled the promise that He made to Adam in Paradise.
St Anne
After years of fervent prayer, an angel appeared to both Anne and Joachim, announcing that they would be blessed with a child who would play a pivotal role in God’s plan for salvation. In a miraculous moment under the Golden Gate of the Temple, Anne and Joachim embraced, and Anne conceived Mary, who would later become the Mother of Jesus. The birth of Mary was a moment of great joy and divine significance, marked by celestial signs and prophetic revelations. Anne and Joachim dedicated themselves to raising Mary in holiness, ensuring she was prepared for her sacred calling. When Mary was three years old, they took her to the temple, where she lived a life of devotion, setting the stage for her future role as the mother of Christ.

Saint Anne lived to see Jesus as a child, passing away at the age of 56 in the loving presence of Mary, Jesus, and Joseph. She is honored as the patron saint of housewives, mothers, and those seeking her intercession for safe childbirth. Her legacy is one of unwavering faith, patience, and obedience to God’s will. Her feast day is celebrated on July 26, and her influence continues through numerous shrines, most notably Saint Anne de Beaupré in Canada, where many seek her intercession for healing and blessings.
